A child's garden teaches kids where veggies come from.

If you are planning a garden this year, why not set aside a little space for your little ones to grow a few veggies of their own? I've seen even picky eaters gobble up veggies they grow themselves.

Children love to watch  the seeds they planted push up through the ground and grow into something they can eat for dinner.  Even if you live in a high rise apartment, you can grow mixed salad greens in a pretty planter or grow carrots in a deep bucket with a sand/soil mix (you'll need some holes in the bottom for drainage).

Vertical gardening on trellises and fences can expand a small growing space.  Your child can get a good crop of peas and pole beans from a deep planter set at the base of a vertical support. If you have more space, think about planting a variety of summer squash that produces a small veggie that is easy for little hands to pick.

If you have a lot more space, you can plant the Halloween pumpkins.  Even one plant should give you enough to carve with a few more to cook into nutitious puddings and pies your child will enjoy.

If you involve your child in the harvest, cleaning and cooking of your home-grown veggies, they will learn even more.

Good habits learned young serve all of us for life. It's great that your child knows where vegetables come from.
