Essential Oils for Women, Part 1--Before Menopause

It seems that women are naturally attracted to essential oils. Perhaps that is because there are so many ways that essential oils address the challenges of a woman’s life. From defusing stress to easing the birth process to moderating the changes at menopause, essential oils are gentle, natural tools for women.

In this first part, we will explore the essential oils that help women during their reproductive years. Next month, we will focus on essential oils that assist during the changes in the second half of a woman’s life.

Women seem particularly prone to stress. We carry the responsibilities of our homes, families and jobs. Many women are also caregivers for aging parents or an ailing family member. Some may also commit their time and talents to their church or some other organization. This is a lot, and at times it can seem like way too much.

It is no wonder that many women love lavender oil. The sweet scent of lavender actually prompts the body to release seratonin, one of our own natural tranquilizers. Essential oil bergamot (which you may have tasted in Earl Grey tea) can be inhaled as a natural antidepressant, as can essential oil grapefruit.

Troublesome periods? Essential oil clary sage often gives quick relief from PMS symptoms and cramping. Just inhale a few drops from a tissue. This very relaxing essential oil can also help you sleep, and may even increase your dreaming. One or two drops on your pillow are all you need. Since this oil increases the effectiveness of uterine contractions, it should be avoiding during pregnancy. However, it can speed delivery of the baby and reduce pain. If you have an interest in using essential oils during delivery, consult a doctor or midwife who is experienced with their use.

Essential oil roman camomile can also be very useful for relieving cramps. One of the most effective ways to use this oil is to put 4-6 drops of essential oil in ¼ cup water and soak up the mixture with a soft cloth. Place the cloth over your abdomen while you put your feet up and relax for 15 minutes.

Finally, essential oil rose is the classic “queen of oils” due to its soothing action on women’s bodies and emotions. This luxurious oil helps to dispel feelings of anger and resentment that often flare up in our busy lives. It is also a great skin conditioner. Women who tend to panic may find that essential oil neroli (orange blossom) restores them to grace and calm. Therapy grade essential oils make perfect aromatherapy for women.
