Fruita Farmers Market

We will be at the Fruita Farmers Market all summer!  Check back often for this week's farmer's market update.

Visit us on the cool, shady lawn of the Community Center on Aspen Street from 8:00 A.M.-Noon.  Look for the rainbow umbrella. Live local music every Saturday.

FOR SATURDAY, JULY 31

POTTED HERBS:

  • Lime mint (just a few!), chocolate mint, spearmint, apple mint.  $3.00 each or 4/$10.00.  Lime mint is a natural for mojitos.  Just four of the current batch left. We have more started, but they will be a few weeks yet.  Chocolate mint tastes just like a peppermint pattie to lots of people.  Chocolate mint is delicious with sherbet, melon or fruit salad.  Spearmint is the classic for iced tea and all those great summer mint drinks.  Finally, if you make mint/apple jelly, apple mint is a great companion to local apples.

Most mints are invasive growers.  We grow ours in large pots, as well as narrow beds bordered by pavement.  Mints will simply take over a mixed garden, so plan accordingly.  They can take full sun or partial shade.

  • Scented geraniums.  Rose and lemon.  $6.00 each or 2/$10.00.  Wonderful year round houseplant with aromatic leaves that dry beautifully for sachets or for use in specialty baked goods. Try baking a few whole fresh leaves rose geranium into a pound cake (place on the bottom of the pan)

Scented geraniums like to grow in a heavy, unglazed clay pot.  They like full to moderate sun, and will delight you all winter long if you have a very sunny window.  They are at their beautiful best in summer, when they can turn into patio plants with the added benefit of repelling mosquitoes.  Scented geraniums are very frost tender, and need to come back into the house before even a hint of frost.  Don't overwater.

  • Basil: Classic sweet Italian basil and spunky Greek basil.  $6.00 each or 2/$10.00

Our basil is planted in generous 1 gallon containers.  You can transplant or just leave in the container.  Basil is very frost sensitive.  Be sure to bring it indoors before the first freeze.  If you have a sunny windowsill, your basil plant will continue to provide fresh leaves for several more weeks inside.  This plant is an annual; it will not come back next year.

  • Lemongrass:  Culinary houseplant. $7.00 each

Grow in a large clay or ceramic pot for beauty, lemongrass tea and fresh herb for Asian cuisine.  Don't overwater.

ESSENTIAL OILS:

We bring only a small sampling of our essential oils since the Fruita Farmer's Market is just eight miles from our Botanica in Mack, Colorado.  If you have an essential oil order you would like to pick up at the Fruita Farmers Market, call us at 858-9565 no later than the evening before the market.  We offer market specials on featured oils for specific applications each week.
